Professor Karsten Menzel is the Chair for Information Technology in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (IT in AEC) at UCC’s School of Engineering. He is well known for his interdisciplinary work aiming to embed information technologies into engineering processes; being part of an international trend established by world class institutes such as Stanford University, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, MIT, or the Technical University in Munich.

Current research at UCC focuses on Data Analytics for Smart Buildings. In his research Professor Menzel compiled data from numerous buildings in Ireland, Germany, Spain, and Greece aiming to analyse the performance of these buildings using complementing data from BIM models and Building Automation Systems.

Professor Menzel is also the Director of UCC’s award winning Master Programme “IT in AEC”, which is accredited by Engineers Ireland and thus a recognised qualification in more than 25 countries worldwide.

A game-changer in how to deliver BIM-education is UCC’s BIM project developed and managed by Professor Menzel. This project brings together Master students with their industryexperience and Bachelor students with their eagerness to develop. Both groups of participants learn about responsibilities and authorities of the different BIM-roles specified in BS 1192-2 in a team project, rather than in academic scenarios.
